A Modern Quilt

Modern quilts are fun to make because they are generally basic designs and often contain significant blank space.  These quilts are fun to work on for a longarm quilter because they demand an interesting quilting design.  The pictured quilt was inspired by a charm pack that a customer had given me for my birthday.  I wanted to make a graduation quilt for my grandaughter. She is an amazing girl so I chose a quilting design that looked like a maze to add interest to the white fabric between the  chevrons. The quilt won a blue ribbon at the Omaha Quilters' Guild annual show in the modern quilt category. That's always fun.

The Best and Worst of Minkee

Minkee is such a wonderful soft fabric to use on the back of a quilt and many customers bring it to me.  I have no trouble quilting it on my long arm machine. However, I caution my customers to be careful to choose a color of minkee that does not contrast with the quilt top colors or the color of thread used in quilting.  Little bits of fiber from the minkee can be pulled to the top of the quilt during the quilting process causing a less than satisfactory visual effect. Instead, choose a color similar to the color of thread you would like for the quilting or similar to the main tone of the quilt whether it is light or dark. Then you'll have the bestpossible result and a beautiful soft quilt.
